I like Safari, but …
May 14, 2009 by Nicki
For a while, I’ve been following the progress of Mozilla’s mobile browser project, codenamed Fennec. As the Mozilla team’s efforts push the project forward, I can’t help but hope that one day soon it will be available on the iPhone. Of course, this will mean that Apple will have to actually APPROVE the app for inclusion in the App Store.
As of this post, Apple has yet to approve any major 3rd party web browser application for the iPhone (meaning not based on Safari). That’s one of the few things where Helio had them beat. When the Opera “mini” browser was released, Helio embraced it. And how could they not? Let’s face it, the Helio native browser was sluggish and seriously lacking in many features where as Opera was sleek, fast, and surely had it beat. Heck, you could even manage your bookmarks online from the Opera website and easily synchronize with the browser on your device.
I would LOVE to see that kind of capability on my iPhone!
I had hoped that by now, Fennec would be far enough along that Helio users could use it. But since Jim and I have jumped aboard the Apple ship, my hopes are now that Fennec could one day soon be made available for iPhone users.
Don’t get me wrong, I like Safari … but I’m a Mozilla fangirl through and through!
Why I love NASCAR

My husband loves NASCAR. I mean he REALLY loves it. I’m sure if it were possible, he’d watch it 24-7-365. He follows NASCAR like I follow WordPress, Firefox, and Alabama football.
I mean, as a sport, it’s “OK”. (Hey, it’s not football! *g*) It’s fun to go to NASCAR events, but I can’t sit and watch it every week like he does. That said, I do tell people that I love NASCAR — and I do, but not for the reasons that most people think.

Iraq Veterans Humble NASCAR Drivers
Kyle Busch, Greg Biffle and other NASCAR drivers and team owners visited soldiers Thursday at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center. They walked through the hospital wards and talked with the wounded, signed autographs, posed for pictures, and for Biffle, gained perspective.
“Everytime I come here, it’s a pretty overwhelming experience,” said Biffle … “This is my fifth year in a row coming. To see the dedication that these men and women have that have served our country and continue to serve our country, it makes you feel pretty small.
“Compared to what they have done and what they do for us … its a pretty grounding experience I think for all of us.”.

If for no other reason, I love NASCAR because NASCAR loves our men and women in uniform.
Addons update

I noticed that at some point over the weekend, the latest version of my MonstersGame: Vampires vs Werewolves Menu addon was approved. YAY!
My mc chris Website Menu Navigation addon is still pending, but anyone who would like the updated version can scroll down and click “See All Versions” to see the pending update. (It will be marked as ‘experimental’ until it’s approved by the AMO team!)
I’m almost finished with the re-write for my MonstersGame addon, but I doubt I’ll be doing much to the mc chris one. I’ve been toying around with ideas for a couple other addons, but will need some permissions first for content/use (one of which includes a small business opportunity hopefully!).
I’ll post more info later!
Firefox addons updates
I know I said I would never update my old extensions, but I had a request from a user that tugged at my heart. A young man wrote to me pleading for an update to my MonstersGame: Vampires vs Werewolves Menu addon. Apparently his brother is stationed somewhere overseas and has access to the internet; they both play MG and have been keeping in touch that way.
What could I say except, “Ok, just for you two … ” ![]()
Updating the extension proved to be a little more work than I first thought. So much has changed from 2.x to 3. After wrestling with it for the last couple days, I’ve finally got a working version to upload to AMO.
The skinning isn’t working, so that’ll have to wait until the next release. But for now, my addons rest in the capable hands of the AMO reviewers and editors.
WordPress updated
July 21, 2008 by Nicki
It’s over with, and it wasn’t too painful. At least I remembered to update my WP-Config this time.
That said, I’ve been hearing horror stories from others who’ve tried to upgrade, so I guess I’m counting myself lucky. So far I’ve updated this site and BYKYC. I’ll most likely be doing the others later this week (or whenever time allows).
My darling Jim passed this gem to me and I know there are a couple readers here who’ve asked me if I knew of such a thing: WordPress Automatic Upgrade. The website says it’s compatible with the latest version of WP, but I have not yet had a chance to try it out myself. (may do so on a less ‘popular’ site, LOL!)
An update on things …
New Orleans was fun, but like all vacations it wasn’t long enough. Work has been absolute Hell lately, and the insurance company that we’ve been trying to settle with (remember my wreck, going on 2 months ago?) is giving us the run-around, so I’m stressing a bit more than usual.
To those who’ve asked about the Lunarpages WordPress Theme Design contest, no I didn’t win anything. But I am VERY grateful to those who voted for me! There’s been some speculation as to how the deciding votes (LP staff?) really came out, but in all honesty I’m just happy being nominated … for now. ;P
Speaking of theme designs, I’ve submitted a handful of mine to the new WordPress Theme Directory. So hopefully those will show up soon.
SA on the slow track …
I feel pretty bad that I haven’t gotten as much done on my Soldiers’ Angels stuff as I’d hoped. I am beginning to think that maybe I’ve bitten off more than I can chew in helping the warehouse/donations tracking, Walmart grants, all the websites, and even my own projects here for SA of Alabama. I’m feeling VERY overwhelmed, and frankly a little disappointed because the local response hasn’t gone as well as I’d been hoping.
There is a glimmer of hope though. A gentleman waved at me while stopped at a redlight last week and told me that he saw my bumper stickers (Soldiers’ Angels) and that he just had to thank me for supporting our soldiers. I’m not in SA for any kind of recognition or personal glory, but it IS nice feeling appreciated, and reminds me of why I want to do so much …
Geekery
About three weeks ago I heard from one of my old Neopets buddies, Rose. We talked for a bit and caught each other up on how our families were doing, and the usual. She nudged me about possibly re-joining Neopets, so on a whim I did. My character name this time around is BamaAngels so if you’re on, look me up!
(boy, what I wouldn’t give to have all that NP stuff I gave away, LOL!!!)
Also, I am now an active Editor for Addons.Mozilla.org again. I feel badly for neglecting those duties for so long, but am happy to say that I’m now back and trying to do a little each week to help out the AMO gang.
Firefox 3: So far, so good!
June 17, 2008 by Nicki
An hour into the Download Day launch, the Mozilla servers were heavily overloaded and many people (myself included) could not get through. There was a quick apology posted by Melissa over on the Mozilla Blog with the promise that things will go live soon and the download day will start with the site’s go-live. That’s all well and good, BUT with a little help from Read Write Web I was able to snag the download and install the latest and greatest in a matter of seconds.
(No worries, Mozzie. I’ll be downloading several times tonight from home to count towards the download goal!)
Hooray, it installed!
I really like the changes I’m seeing. I’m now reading over the Power User’s Guide over on LifeHacker and Deb Richardson’s Field Guide to Firefox 3. The overall extension support seems pretty good too. Out of all of my extensions, only a handful are not yet FF3-ready.
So those of you who’ve been counting down the hours like I have … what’s your take on the new ‘Fox so far?
Firefox 3 Download Day
June 16, 2008 by Nicki
Tomorrow, June 17th is the release date for Firefox 3 to the general public. Mozilla has set a lofty goal for itself — they are trying to set a Guinness World Record for the most software downloads in 24 hours.
Sounds neat, right? Well, I plan on participating … how ’bout you?
To participate, all you’ll need to do is just download Firefox 3 tomorrow within the first 24 hours of its release.

Jim and I exchanged our gifts last night. He surprised me with a gigantic plush frog, a plush Firefox, a few other Firefox goodies, and a TON of my favorite candy.
I gave Jim a very nice golf shirt and some swanky unmentionables. RAWR!
Jessie’s getting a nifty Hello Kitty lunch kit from me, and a gigantic plush doggie and ton of candy from Jim. She’s spent the week with her mother, so we get her back tonight and most of tomorrow. We’re hoping to have her some this weekend too, but that’s a bit sketchy as we’ll also be helping Jim’s mom move to Montgomery, and I’ve got a side project that I’ve got to finish this weekend. I’m hoping to get out at some point and pick up some books … I’ve been working on a SharePoint template for work and am a little stuck (messing around in MS’ proprietary format/code). So we’ll see …
I hope y’all are having a good day/week!
Pardon my progress…

I think the domain shuffle is pretty much through. I moved over the bulk of my domains last night and dropped 4 today. There may be the odd missing image or directory here or there, but I think I’ve covered about 98% of the site. You may also notice a change on the front page. I have removed my Firefox Extension Development page link from the navigation menu and added my Fanlistings. I doubt I will be continuing the development on the extensions I’ve done in the past, as I’m no longer involved in those projects. I may decide to start new ones in the 3.0 format later, but simply don’t have the time (or interest) to do it now.
Also, I have rearranged the sidebar a bit. Hopefully the recently blogged items are more visible now. (sorry ’bout that Jo!
) I’ve also added a couple new collapsing sections, the newest being Local Link Love which features metro-area sites and organizations of which I’m involved, or have discussed here previously. Feel free to take a peek and stretch out a bit.
There are several new interests I’ve been wanting to add in for a while, so hopefully I’ll have time to make those modifications soon. Also, I will be working on my portfolio more, taking off older works and adding some newer ones. It needs re-structuring horribly, and hopefully Zooomr will be done with their move next week (so most of my images will start working again, LOL!). In the meantime I’m making short notes of what needs updating — while surfing the web looking for an appreciation gift for Jessie’s teacher. (funny there’s a whole slew of teacher gifts sites, or with teacher gift ideas in general)
Right now I’m wishing I hadn’t cleaned out the spams caught by Akismet because I ran across this nifty suggestion for handling splogs (spam blogs). Considering I get a ton of trackbacks from the same 8 or 10 or so, it won’t be long until I add a bit o’ code to the ole HTACCESS file to take care of ‘em!
I’ve gone mobile…

Actually this site has BEEN mobile, but I think I’ve finally worked out all the kinks. With the help of Lester Chan’s WP-WAP, I’ve been able to create a browsable view for mobile devices:
URL: http://mobile.nitallica.org/
Additionally, if you have a WML-compliant plugin (or something similar), you can view it in Firefox.
(Neat, huh?!)
I’m currently researching ways to do some auto-detection, but for the meantime this works…
EDIT: It seems someone beat me to it. Sweeeeeeeeet
Had to edit the script to include updated Opera Mini header info and J2ME-wrapped apps, but so far testing yields good results.
