Will you meet me under the Liberty Tree?

November 16, 2008 by Nicki

This morning I received an invitation from my Cotillion sister, Beth of Blue Star Chronicles:

Defend Liberty

An Allegory to Liberty

Do you remember The Liberty Tree and the story that surrounds it? There was an old elm tree that stood in Boston Commons in the days before the American Revolution. It was a beautiful old tree that became a real rallying point – a symbol really - for the growing resistance to the rule of England over the feisty American colonies. Called ‘The Liberty Tree,’ it was often decorated with banners and lanterns by ‘the resisters’ and used in communicating their secret messages to each other. Their meetings were regularly held there to express views against the Crown and to vent frustrated emotions.

When the news of The Liberty Tree spread throughout the colonies, local patriots in each of the 13 colonies formed a ‘Sons of Liberty’ group (or network of sorts) and identified a large tree to be used as a meeting place. In those times, holding an unauthorized assembly was really dangerous business that carried threats of imprisonment or death so the usual places to plot and plan were out of the question. But, the casual appearance of a group chatting beneath a tree seemed much, much safer!

As resistance to the British grew, flags bearing a representation of The Liberty Tree were flown to symbolize the unwavering spirit of liberty itself. These flags were later a common sight during the battles of the American Revolution.

The British made The Liberty Tree an object of great ridicule and scorn. However, the ridicule and scorn were simply ‘just words’ and many from that day forward said it was under The Liberty Tree that America was born, giving its sons and daughters a legacy of liberty.

Liberty is Under Attack

Today, our country faces a threat from abroad and a threat - in the form of ideological conflict - from within. With the coming of a new administration and the promise of a more bloated and opportunistic government, the need for citizens to resist complacency and to let their voices be heard, has led to a rekindling of the spirit that founded The Sons (and Daughters) of Liberty.

We at Right Pundits have established a network comprised of blogging patriots who understand that it is the duty of each of us to champion the principles of liberty, freedom, an educated engaged citizenry and representative government. Our network is called ‘The Liberty Tree’ and we are asking you to join us!

In becoming a member of The Liberty Tree Network, you will join an informed community of bloggers that, instead of offering nothing but clever yet empty rhetoric, will actively support and promote liberty, civic responsibility, national security, and the American heritage as our Founding Fathers intended.

We will actively work to expose lies and propaganda of incoming administration and the main stream media while being diligent to maintain honor, truthfulness and integrity in our own reporting.

Join The Liberty Tree Network Today!

The Liberty Tree Network uses a feature of feedburner that allows blogs to group their posts together into a common “network feed.” This feed is separate from your normal feedburner feed which remains on your blog. The latest posts from network members will display on all member sites who place the feed on their blog, so for a short time each of your posts will be highly visible across the network. See what the display looks like in the lower right sidebar on this page.

First step is to put the network feed by copying this code to your blog:
[ get the code at http://www.rightpundits.com/?page_id=2379 ]

Second, Email us at libertytree [at] rightpundits [dot] com and we will send you an invitation to add your own feed into the list. Once you are added to the network, your blog posts will be seen on all the member blogs. You must have a feedburner feed for this to work.

Participation in The Liberty Tree requires that you display the code on your blog, preferably your homepage for the benefit of all members. The code is configured to display the 5 latest posts from the network, but you can choose to increase that number. This will always be the latest posts regardless of who made them.

Who will stand with me?

Welcome aboard, Barracuda! :)

August 29, 2008 by Nicki

I had read a few rumors last night and was very pleased this morning to read (first on CNBC, then the Chicago Tribune) that Alaska Governor Sarah “Barracuda” Palin will be John McCain’s running mate.

SWEET! :D

Nicknamed “Barracuda” by her high school basketball team mates, Palin will, IMO, be a smart choice. Not only does she bring executive experience to the table, she’s a big supporter of our troops (a HUGE plus in my book!) as well as the global war on terrorism. She’s against wasteful government spending. Some prime examples of this: once she was in office, she got rid of the governor’s private plane and limo. She takes commercial flights and takes her SUV.

She has had a 80-90% approval rate. Guys will like her because not only is she pretty, she also hunts, fishes, and is an overall outstanding outdoorswoman. She’s a mother of 5, and will no doubt make a great Vice President.

In short: She is a man’s woman and a woman’s woman.

You can find a great bio here. Don’t take my word for it, look it up! :)

Today’s funny courtesy of my Cotillion sister, Beth:

Stunning Senior Moment

A self-important college freshman attending a recent football game took it upon himself to explain to a senior citizen sitting next to him why it was impossible for the older generation to understand his generation.

‘You grew up in a different world, actually an almost primitive one’, the student said, loud enough for many of those nearby to hear. ‘The young people of today grew up with television, jet planes, space travel, man walking on the moon. Our space probes have visited Mars. We have nuclear energy, ships and electric and hydrogen cars, cell phones, and computers with light-speed processing … and more.’

After a brief silence, the senior citizen responded as follows:

‘You’re right, son. We didn’t have those things when we were young … so we invented them. Now, you arrogant little s***, what are you doing for the next generation?’

The applause was amazing.

Congress Twitters (Critters?)

August 4, 2008 by Nicki

H/T: Vivian and the Cotillion ladies, and Ari Herzog!

In following Friday’s debacle (read about it here, here, here, and here) I realized that there were quite a few tech-savvy House/Senate members who were fellow Twitterers. I have never seen a listing, so thought I’d start one here:

(Alphabetized by state, last name)

Feel free to submit the Twitter accounts of any elected officials who are not listed in the comments below — be sure to include their Twitter account name as well as the party and state!

Honorable Mention:

Update: Ari Herzog has erected the US Congress on Twitter Wiki, so be sure to check there as well!

I have a couple good ones for today, so let’s start off with this from the lovely Miranda:

I will never hear church bells ringing again without smiling. Upon hearing that her elderly grandfather had just passed away, Katie went straight to her grandparent’s house to visit her 95-year old grandmother and comfort her.

When she asked how her grandfather had died, her grandmother replied, ‘He had a heart attack while we were making love on Sunday morning.’

Horrified, Katie told her grandmother that 2 people that were nearly 100 years old, having sex would surely be asking for trouble.

‘Oh, no, my dear,’ replied granny. ‘Many years ago, realizing our advanced age, we figured out the best time to do it was when the church bells would start to ring. It was just the right rhythm. Nice and slow and even. Nothing too strenuous, simply in on the Ding, and out on the Dong.’

She paused to wipe away a tear, and continued, ‘He’d still be alive today if that ice cream truck hadn’t come along.’

And this one from my Cotillion sister, Debra:

An email from Ireland to the brethren in the States…a point to ponder despite your political affiliation:

“We, in Ireland, can’t figure out why people are even bothering to hold an election in the United States. On one side, you have a pants wearing lawyer, married to a lawyer who can’t keep his pants on, who just lost a long and heated primary against a lawyer who goes to the wrong church who is married to yet another lawyer who doesn’t even like the country her husband wants to run.

Now, on the other side, you have a nice old war hero whose name starts with the appropriate ‘Mc’ terminology married to a good looking younger woman who owns a beer distributorship.

What in Lord’s name are ye lads thinking over there in the colonies?”

Back in the Heart of Dixie

July 15, 2008 by Nicki

Well, things are slowly returning back to “normal” … I was greeted this morning with 600+ emails in my work Inbox, 100+ in my personal, and ~3000 feed entries waiting to be read.

LOL! Miss me much did they? ;)

I see that WordPress has released 2.6 finally. The blogosphere is all a-buzz with the news. Suggested reading: Doug Campbell, Keith Dsouza, and Ryan Boren. So now I’ll have to update all my blogs, themes, and plugins.

Yay … I’ll get around to it (hopefully!) this week …

We had a great time in NOLA. The drive down and back was pretty pleasant. We took the “scenic route” passing through Montgomery, stopping by Jim’s mom’s both ways (she kept Jessie for us). I was reminded why I love living in Alabama. I remember thinking to myself, “My God, we live in a beautiful state!”

We stopped briefly in Waveland, Mississippi, and in upper Louisiana. It’s been nearly 10 years since I’ve been down there … everything I remember is gone. Katrina and Rita really kicked the collective asses of coastal cities in lower AL, MS, and LA.

Otherwise the drive down to New Orleans was nice. We had great weather (outside of the heat and OPPRESSIVE humidity!) I took the time while in New Orleans to see some sights, have some great food, partake in local (and interesting) spirits, and just enjoy myself in general. The reunion was a lot of fun, and it was interesting to see the people Jim grew up with.

I was lucky enough to meet up and have lunch with two of my Cotillion sisters: Greta Perry and Conservative Belle. I would have liked to have spent more time with them, but the heat royally kicked my butt and Jim and I had so much planned, LOL!

Hopefully I’ll be making another trip down that way pretty soon!

We stopped by so many shops in the French Quarters that I loved! Many had beautiful clothing and jewelry that I could have easily gone “ga-ga” over. We stopped in one vampire shoppe that had many cute novelties and some interesting books covering local and Southern folklore. The shop owner had a BEAUTIFUL German Sheppard (the “head of security” LOL!) that was just as sweet as he could be!

I want another dog!

We also stopped by a local mall to pick up a few amenities that were forgotten in the hurried packing process. It was pretty much like what we have here back at home. I checked out one store that sold a lot of cell gear, drooled over some bluetooth cell phone headsets and considered getting another micro sd card for my Helio Ocean. (nah, will wait and get them cheaper online! LOL)

One thing that really sticks out in my memory is how “available” alcohol is down there. I kid you not, we walked into a Wal-mart and there was a HUGE section with every type of liquor and beer I could ever want! And you can’t walk 50 feet without coming across a daiquiri shop! :)

There’s so much more to tell, but we’ll leave it at this for now …

It’s good to be home!

Happy 4th

July 4, 2008 by Nicki

I hope everyone is having a happy Independence Day so far. Already I’ve seen a flurry of patriotic posts across so many of my favorite blogs this morning, but the best I’ve seen thus far would be my Cotillion sister Cassandra at Villainous Company who shares with us “Why I Am Patriotic: A Love Letter to America” — it’s a wonderful and beautifully written piece that, in my opinion, conveys so elegantly what so many of us truly believe.

Benjamin Franklin said, “Where Liberty dwells, there is my country.” Indeed this is my country, my home, my sweet land of Liberty. Enjoy today, sing the praises of those who have fought and remember those who are still fighting for the freedoms we enjoy.

May God bless us. May God bless those who defend us. And may God bless the United States of America, the land that I love.

Have a happy 4th!

Humpday Hilarities

June 4, 2008 by Nicki

This funny bit comes courtesy of my Cotillion sister, Cassandra:

Southern girls …

A very gentle Southern lady was driving across the Savannah River Bridge in Georgia one day. As she neared the top of the bridge, she noticed a young man fixin’ to jump. She stopped her car, rolled down the window and said, “Please sir, don’t jump, think of your dear mother and father.”

He replied, “Mom and Dad are both dead; I’m going to jump.”

She said, “Well, think of your wife and children.”

He replied, “I’m not married and I don’t have any kids.”

Grasping for any opportunity, she cried, “Think of your job, the work still to be done.”

“I was fired today and have no prospect of another job.”

Running out of ideas, she appealed to his patriotism and said, “Well, think of Robert E. Lee.”

He replied, ”Who’s Robert E. Lee?”

She replied, ”Well bless your heart sugar, just go ahead and jump.”

A Tiara makes the NYT

May 20, 2008 by Nicki

About two weeks ago I posted about Cotillion sister Jane Novak, who has become an outspoken advocate for a Yemeni journalist, Abdul Karim al-Khaiwani, who is facing execution for sedition. Since then, so many have signed the petition and blogged this story.

Well, today an article about Jane is featured on the New York Times blogs, and this morning made its way onto the front page of their website. Way to go, Jane!!

I encourage you to go read the article, and if you’re so inclined, please bookmark and/or save to your favorite bookmarking/sharing services:

I understand that ABC News, CNN, et. al. are also getting in on the action … Jane says:

ABC gave me a link http://abcnews.go.com/. CNN is sending a car at 12:30 for a 2:30 show. BBC Radio at 6:30.

YAY! Way to go, Jane!

I’m seeing a ton of coverage on Technorati:

Jane’s article is also listed on Technorati’s Politics channel. :D

Also reporting:

Feeling left out?

If you have blogged or posted about this story, leave your link in the comments below and I’ll add your link to the list! (Hooray, link love!!!!)

Update

Al-Khaiwani’s verdict and sentencing case has been postponed! It looks like all the media attention got them nervous, and are probably waiting for all the “hubbub” to die down…
